"This story grew from my interest in personal family history and local history, particularly regarding Hiram Walker's influence on my town, Kingsville, and the tourist attraction he built on the lake in 1889 called the Mettawas Hotel.
... a found passport of my own Great Aunt Betsy and Great Uncle Norman was the catalyst for creating and motivating my characters. I had no idea what my own Aunt Betsy's early life in Canada had been like; I decided to imagine her working for the summer of 1900 at the Mettawas."
