JIGSAW PUZZLES 🧩

Defn; “a puzzle consisting of a picture printed on cardboard or wood and cut into various pieces of different shapes that have to be fitted together”

As the River Bookshop team imagined what other items would fit in our bookshop we came up with the idea of offering puzzles. Our research indicated that most independents carry them so why not us?  Our true puzzle aficionado is Colleen - all winter long she works on 2000- or 3000-piece puzzles laid out on our coffee table.  A roaring fire behind her and a martini close at hand. Pretty sweet set up.  So it is only fitting that she personally curates our puzzle purchases.

We carry two of her favourite suppliers.

Crocodile Creek believes in the art of play and makes thoughtful, beautifully designed products for children. All their puzzles are made from recycled pressed paperboard and soy-based inks.

Eurographics is a world-leading puzzle manufacturer headquartered in Montreal. They are known for their high quality and wide selection of puzzles. All their puzzles are made from recycled board and printed with vegetable-based ink. Colleen loves doing puzzles and that is reason enough for anyone to do them, but we got wondering about other benefits occur from doing puzzles - as it turns out there are many:

🧩 exercise the left and right sides of your brain AT ONCE

🧩 improve your short term memory

🧩 improve your visual spatial reasoning

🧩 great meditation tool and stress reliever

🧩 great way to connect with family

🧩 great for some needed alone time

🧩 you’ll live longer if you puzzle regularly (that’s what the research claims?!)

With all these benefits the River Bookshop would love to introduce puzzles to more of our readers while rewarding existing puzzle fans. Accordingly from January 19 to January 31 we are offering 10% off all our puzzles. Come to our bookshop and check out the  puzzle displays in our windows or go on riverbookshop.com to see our broad supply. Use code: jigsaw10 at check out to get your discount

And get puzzling!

And if that's not enough, the River Bookshop is partnering with the Art Gallery of Windsor for a one-of-a-kind virtual event.

Join us on the last Wednesday of every month at 7 pm, January through March, for themed discussions accompanied by books and art. January 27th's meeting is based on the Three Collective, a local group of Indigenous artists. We will be discussing thought-provoking themes like colonialism, harmful "helping," and collectivity. The discussion will feature art from the AGW's collection and books hand-picked by River's Head Bookseller, Lori Wightman — and some books selected by the Three Collective themselves.

You can learn more about this great event here.

And coming up in February is another National Virtual Event from Penguin Random House. An exclusive conversation with debut author, Ashley Audrain - her book, The Push, is one that will keep you on the edge of your seat and she is being joined by the amazing, Shari Lapena! Don't miss this one if you are a suspense fan.

Hope to hear from you soon!
