Let's Try This Again! (Heritage Preservation Event)

May 8, 2023

Back on January 25th, the University of Windsor Alumni Association and River Bookshop had a packed Alumni Meet-Up ready to go. Then it snowed and snowed and snowed.

Unfortunately we had to cancel that night but we are ready to GO again! On May 24th at 6:30 pm, we will team up to host “Heritage Preservation in Your Community.” Author Meg Reiner will talk about her book Heritage Buildings of Amherstburg. Then Meg will join panelists Dorian Moore, sessional instructor of Visual Arts and the Built Environment, University of Windsor, and Adam Coates, Amherstburg Senior Planner, Heritage, Urban Design, to discuss the importance of heritage properties and the challenges they face. We are delighted that Mayor Michael Prue will moderate the discussion.

Some pressing issues our panel might discuss:

  • How come Essex County has only two heritage conservation districts when there are over 130 in cities and small towns across Ontario?
  • What incentives should be in place to encourage property owners to invest in restoring and protecting their heritage properties?
  • What impact could Bill 23 have on heritage properties?

We look forward to seeing you in person or via Zoom. To register for either, please click here

Since our Alumni Meet-Ups were first announced, we have hosted two very successful events. In March, cookbook author Jennifer Emilson packed the house for a tasty talk about her best-selling book The Lemon Apron Cookbook. In April, Pelee Island’s mayor Cathy Miller talked about the beauty of the island and her plans to make it even more popular. We hope to see you as we team up to host a variety of interesting subjects.
