Tornadoes … ice storms … major flooding … oh my!
I remember the tornado that ripped into a Windsor Curling Club and killed four people on April 3, 1974. An acquaintance of mine lost her Dad that night. More recently, a major ice storm damaged many trees and blocked roads across the county. One of our employees had a tree come down on her roof, and she can’t live in her home until her roof is fixed. So whether it’s frequent heavy rains or scary-high winds, residents of Essex County have to keep an eye on the the weather.
One night last fall we were hosting an event in the Hole in the Wall and a violent short storm popped up. I had to go out in the downpour to look for two chairs that the high winds took away. I never did find one of them! That same night I went home and realized that violent weather would be a good topic to present in the Hole in the Wall. I follow Beth Triolet (@Bethtrio) on Twitter and reached out to her that night to see if she was interested. She said yes immediately.
Beth works with WE SEE (Windsor Essex Storm & Environment Enthusiasts, who are on-the-ground weather spotters) so she is the perfect presenter. Her talk will focus on different types of violent weather in Essex County and will share some of the photos and stories from their damage surveys. They will also show us a map of all the tornadoes that have impacted our area since the 1950s.
It’s April now, and therefore tornado season is here! Scientists are starting to see an indication that climate change is making storms even more dangerous.
So, forearmed is forewarned 🌪️ Come join us to learn more.
