Weekly Buzz Newsletter: Fall is Officially Here

Weekly Buzz Newsletter: Fall is Officially Here

Oct 10, 2024

The leaves are turning from green to yellow, orange to red, and fall has officially started. It might be cooling down outside, but things inside River Bookshop are just starting to heat up.

The new Hole In The Wall is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Plus, River Bookshop is planning this year's Festival of Frights, including kids treat-or-treating on Saturday, October 27th, at 2PM. Mark your calendars!

Our Banned Book highlight is underway, and our display has people thinking. Why would anyone ban a book?

Stop into River Bookshop by the end of October and save 15% when you purchase a book from our display that's been banned or challenged in North America. Fill your selves with Banned Books!

Are you looking for something to do with your little readers this Friday? Come join us at River Bookshop for our P.A. Day Story Time.

Join us at 11 AM for some Autumn and Season themed stories from our Children's Nook, and some fun colouring activity sheets too.

Will you be joining us Sunday at 11AM for Story Time? River Bookshop is thankful for Autumn!

Julienne is our story time reader this Sunday, and she will share some Autumn and Thanksgiving themed stories on this holiday weekend.

HOLE IN THE WALL LOUNGE BAR - ANOTHER GREAT ADDITION TO THE COMMUNITY

In creating the Hole in the Wall, we created a new destination that adds to the unique nature of Amherstburg:

  • an intimate and elevated lounge bar
  • wine selection curated by one of Canada’s very few Master Sommeliers, Jennifer Huether, including wine that is currently not available in the county
  • a special entertainment line up that is largely new to the area—check out the new "Marty Gervais Presents" Poetry Series starting on October 24th

For reservations go to theholeinthewall.ca

For over fifty years, Marty Gervais has been a force in the Writing Community of Essex County. From his work with the Windsor Star, and writing local history books like Rumrunners and Five Days Walking Five Towns, to publishing hundreds of authors' works as the editor and publisher of Black Moss Press—not to mention his work at the University of Windsor, where he has inspired future generations of writers, and launched many careers—he has had a great impact on our literary community.

The River Bookshop team is overjoyed to welcome Marty Gervais as host to our new poetry series, "Marty Gervais Presents," taking place upstairs in the newly renovated Hole in the Wall. We'll be kicking off the series Thursday, October 24th at 6:30PM. For tickets, click here.

GREAT WINE + GREAT FOOD = GREAT COMBINATION!

At the new intimate and elevated Hole in the Wall lounge bar, we are delighted that Jennifer Huether, our Master Sommelier, worked with us to create a wine selection that is unknown in the County. The theme of our wine list is Mediterranean, which encompasses unique wines from warm climates around the globe: southern France, southern Italy, California, and Greece. Jennifer is also the co-author of The Social Herbivore. Her book offers a comprehensive guide to plant-based food and wine pairings. If you are vegetarian, or just cooking for one, her book contains recipes that are perfectly matched with very interesting wines.

Enzo, our Hole in the Wall chef, will also be using some of these recipes in his fine dining menu. If great wine, great food, and great books are your thing, be sure to visit River Bookshop and the Hole in the Wall soon.

HOLE IN THE WALL HAS A LIFT

Heritage designated property 67 Richmond was built in 1885, long before people paid attention to accessibility. When we restored the building, we invested in changes that made the bookshop accessible for wheel chairs, walkers, trams, and electric scooters.

While the upstairs has successfully hosted over 250 events over the past four years, we knew that the stairs were still a challenge for some of our guests.

Now with the opening of the new Hole in the Wall, we are pleased to announce that we have installed a lift and our staff will be pleased to help guests access it to enjoy our “intimate and
elevated” lounge bar. It will also be excellent for our book club members, author meet ups, and soon regular movie nights.

The Hole in the Wall and River Bookshop teams

We love fall weather so much that we moved last Sunday's Story Time to the Art Alley. Join us for Friday (PA day) and Sunday Story Times at 11AM.

So much to see and do in Amherstburg!

We hope to see you downtown this weekend.
