"FESTIVAL OF FRIGHTS" RETURNS TO RIVER BOOKSHOP

Halloween is quickly approaching, and River Bookshop has planned some spooktacular events to celebrate. Join River Bookshop's Witches this Saturday for a fun-filled afternoon.

Events include: Witches Walk Trick-or-Treat Costume Parade, Kids Poetry Contest, Pumpkin Carving Contest, and more. Details below!

We are excited to invite you to our Witch’s Walk, which includes Trick-or-Treating and a Costume Contest! This event will take place on Saturday, October 26th at 2PM.

We ask all participants to arrive by 1:45, and we encourage everyone to register on our Facebook page. Click here to register, or simply reply here with your name and the number of kids attending. This allows our participating businesses to prepare for attendance numbers. Participating local businesses include:

River Bookshop, Richmond Popcorn Company, Burger 67, Evelyn's Candy House, Musicland, Owl’s Nest Emporium, White Woods Home, Hotel STRY, Flow Cafe & Bikes, The Panetteria, The O Bar and FRATE Street Food, The Barber Shop, Downtown Espresso Cafe, Murray Street Kitchen, Nuccelli’s Frozen Yogurt, Pure Day Spa, and more...

After the parade, join the River Bookshop Witches in our Art Alley for the Costume Contest, where our guest judges will choose several winners in a variety of categories. The weather is supposed to be BOO-tiful, and we hope you will come join in the FUN!

Do you have a young writer who loves Halloween? There is still time for them to enter our Kids Poetry Contest. We invite all 4–18 year olds to use their wildest imaginations to write a short poem about what they think happens "When The Lights Go Out at River Bookshop."

Poetry Contest Rules: Your poem must be no longer than 8 lines (not including the title). Your name, age, grade, and telephone number must be included with your poem. Your poem must be dropped off or emailed to info@riverbookshop.com by 12PM/Noon on Friday, October 25th, 2024.

Winners will receive a Spooky Book Prize and will be given the opportunity to read their poem at our Sunday Story Time on October 27th. Winners will be judged in three categories: Grades JK–3, Grades 4–8, and Grades 9–12.

Did you know we are also hosting a PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST?

Bring your already-carved pumpkin to River Bookshop between 10AM and 12PM/Noon on Saturday, October 26th. Each pumpkin entry must be registered with a staff member to be assigned a number for judging. We will also need your name and contact information.

All of the pumpkin entries will be displayed around the River Bookshop exterior and our Art Alley. Viewing and customer voting will begin at noon on Saturday, October 26th, and end at noon on Sunday, October 27th. Ballots will then be counted, and several prizes will be awarded.  Participants will have the chance to win an OOLY Art Prize. All pumpkins must be picked up by their carvers on Monday, October 28th, by 5PM.

Be sure to visit our display of Halloween Books, puzzles, stuffies, stickers, and more. We have some adorably spooky Jellycats, a variety of Nightmare Before Christmas activity books, Little Golden Books, Goosebumps, and too many books about witches to count!

Any Harry Potter Fans out there? Check out our collection of books, puzzles, cookbooks, and more.

Sunday Story Time is one of our favourite events at River Bookshop. This weekend our theme is HALLOWEEN!

Join us on Sunday, October 27th, at 11AM, when Darrie-Ann will be sharing some of the spookily sweet stories that we have on our Halloween display at River Bookshop. Bring your little ones dressed in their costumes if you please, and kick off your Halloween festivities with us at River Bookshop.

The Artists of Colour present Tribute to the Greats at the Hole in the Wall, Saturday, November 2nd and Friday, November 8th at 7PM. Tickets are $20. For tickets, call 519-734-9039.

Artwork of the Artists of Colour will be on display in the Hole in the Wall from October 31st to November 13th.

MOVIE THEATRE RETURNS TO AMHERSTBURG

The Liberty Movie theatre opened in Amherstburg in 1919 and unfortunately closed in 1961. If you look closely you can still see that its name has survived on the heritage building across from
the library. Today our closest theatre is a long 30km drive away.

Our plan is to show a movie once a month in the Hole In the Wall—typically on a Wednesday, starting in November. We are open to adding more dates if there is strong interest. Our first movie is "The Great Gatsby” staring Leonardo DiCaprio, to be shown Wednesday, November 13th at 7PM. We chose this movie because the Hole in the Wall has a speak easy feel, and our muse is the late F. Scott Fitzgerald, an American novelist best known for novels depicting the excess of the Jazz age.

Pre-order this beautiful hardback edition with attractive design and specially commissioned illustrations throughout. A paragon of the great American novel, and an assigned book in schools and universities around the world, this is a classic that everyone should read. With its haunting and evocative depiction of the Roaring Twenties and post-war America, The Great Gatsby is one of the greatest classics of the 20th Century. The Great Gatsby is featured on Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century. A great gift purchase.

So much to see and do in Amherstburg!

We hope to see you downtown this weekend.
