Weekly Buzz Newsletter: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

SEPTEMBER 30TH IS THE NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

September 30th marks the day honouring the children who never returned home and the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.

To shine a light on this important day, the Town of Amherstburg has programming this weekend leading up to it, on Saturday the 27th, and other businesses downtown do as well. Read on for more details. We'll also touch on other events happening this weekend.

BOOKS IN THE 'BURG BOOK CLUB TUESDAY

For our September book club meet up, we've chosen 52 Ways to Reconcile by David A. Robertson

We'll also be joined by friends from Ska:na Family Learning Centre, who will be providing cedar tea and fry bread. We'll be having a conversation around David's book and paths to reconciliation. All are welcome!

If you'd like to join us for this discussion, we'll be meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 30th at 7PM at River Bookshop (upstairs in the Hole in the Wall), and offered on Zoom as well. The books are 15% off for members. If you'd like the join the club to receive the discount and the link to Zoom, just email us at any time or visit us in store.

TRUTH & RECONCILIATION STORY TIME

This week at Story Time we welcome Faith Hale, Director of the Ska:na Family Learning Centre, as she joins us to share her stories and wisdom in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Join us at 11AM at River Bookshop. No matter the weather, Story Time will go on. Meet us in the Art Alley when weather is nice or we will see you in the Children's Nook if it's rainy. It's always sunny inside.

TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION GATHERING

Join us in downtown Amherstburg on Saturday, September 27, 2025, 12PM-4PM

Together as a community we are on this journey of reconciliation. The truths of families and survivors of Canadian residential schools have left permanent scars on communities and our nation.

In the spirit of healing and reconciliation, we will gather by the gazebo in King’s Navy Yard Park on Saturday, September 27, 2025. Join us and Ska:na Family Learning Centre to learn more about Indigenous culture, and watch demonstrations of dancing, drumming, and storytelling.

Learn and listen from Elders and motivational speakers from the community. Children’s activities will take place at the teepee, and Indigenous vendors will be in the park selling products.

What’s happening at this year’s gathering starting at 12:00PM:

  • Opening welcome at the gazebo in King’s Navy Yard Park at 12:00pm
  • Corn soup and bannock at Park House Museum
  • Teachings at the Park House and a film screening upstairs
  • River Bookshop featured books and art displays, including 15% discount on select Indigenous titles
  • Orange cookies for sale at Caffeine and Co.
  • Early ON – bracelet making activity and colouring near the teepee in King’s Navy Yard Park
  • Drumming at the gazebo
  • Vendors & more!
