“There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.”
—Jacqueline Kennedy
Tomorrow is “International Children’s Book Day,” so what a perfect time to promote kids reading. From day one, River Bookshop’s store design and much of its energy has focused on encouraging kids to read. Its philosophy: “if kids read, they have a much better chance of growing up to be better adults.”
Research clearly shows that reading books provides critical benefits for children. It develops vocabulary and language skills, and the use of imagination. It also increases success in school and gets them away from technology. Reading scores in Canada are just okay and can definitely be better—especially with young boys. The bookshop offers a number of programs to encourage kids to read. It introduced Sunday morning Story Time shortly after it opened six years ago, and when it introduced celebrity readers, participation really took off. One of its favourite celebrity readers was the late WSO Maestro Robert Franz.

The shop’s passionate children’s champion is Darrie-Ann. Not only does she lead Story Time, but she leads Junior and Teen Book Clubs. You will get a chance to hear from Darrie-Ann in our CKBG
broadcast this Sunday and Saturday at 8AM.
With Easter this Sunday, the bookshop has a special giveaway. Everyone who attends Story Time will be entered into a draw to win a large Jellycat bunny, and other Easter goodies. The Sunday Story Time reader is author Wendy German and she will be reading some wonderful Beatrix Potter books.
Oh... and by the way, all participants at Story Time always get a little treat from Evelyn’s Candy House ![]()

Over the last many months you may have seen a man taking photographs all around Amherstburg. He is the very well known poet, author, photographer Marty Gervais.
He has a beautiful new book coming out called Amherstburg: Picture A River Town. He will launch his book at River Bookshop on April 9th at 6:30PM. Due to Marty’s popularity, the event is already fully booked. But on April 19th at 2PM, you can also meet Marty and friends for a talk about the River Town at Hotel STRY.

JELLYCAT BUNNIES AVAILABLE AT RIVER BOOKSHOP
It's not too late to get your hands on a Jellycat Bunny. They might be flying off the shelves this weekend, so stop in, call, or shop online. Bunnies are available in many different sizes and colours, and we even have bunny bag charms.
AND THAT'S NOT ALL... we have hundreds of Jellies in our shop, including many from the NEW space collection and new Spring line.

We had so much fun last Sunday at Story Time. Huge thanks from the team at River Bookshop to Anna from The Panetteria for sharing stories about FAMILY & BREAD, and for bringing chocolate chip cookies for everyone. Pictured above is our Story Time audience listening to our guest reader and thinking about cookies, croissants, and sourdough.
So much to see and do in Amherstburg!
We hope to see you downtown this weekend.
