RIVER BOOKSHOP RECOGNIZES THE NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
September 30th marks the day honouring the children who never returned home and the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities.
To shine a light on this important day, River Bookshop has programmed the entire weekend leading up to the day with a number of related events.
Friday, September 27th
When Leaves Turn Yellow: Exclusive Pre-Screening
River Bookshop is honoured to host an exclusive local screening of a 30-minute film entitled When Leaves Turn Yellow, part of the Culture Killers Culture Healers series. The film depicts true stories of real people healing from residential school trauma.
The event will be held in the new Hole in the Wall lounge bar above the bookshop. Doors open at 6PM for the screening at 6:30PM. The event will conclude by 9PM, when the Hole in the Wall will be open to the public. Seating is limited. To learn more and reserve your free ticket, visit this link or click the poster above.
Saturday, September 28th
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an important time to acknowledge the wrongs that were done in the past, and those that continue to the happen to this day. We need to right these wrongs together and move forward in healing and reconciliation.
On Saturday, September 28th, River Bookshop will have a display in The Art Alley showcasing books that educate us on the Truth and inspire Reconciliation. Also, check out our in-store display filled with wonderful Indigenous books covering many themes and topics, including fiction and nonfiction for all ages.
While you're here, you can also find all 94 Calls to Action displayed throughout the store on orange shirts, up now through Monday the 30th.
Also on Saturday, from 4:00-5:30PM, River Bookshop is pleased to welcome back Dr Beverly Jacobs ... Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, Bear Clan.
Dr Jacobs will be signing copies of Keetsahnak / Our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Sisters. Bev was a contributor to this impressive literary work, which is a wonderful example of collaboration and reconciliation.
Sunday, September 29th
On Sunday September 29th, River Bookshop's Story Time will feature children's stories about why we have Orange Shirt Day and the importance of The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
River Bookshop has many children's books for young readers that are wonderful resources for our community, our classrooms, and our homes.
Join us for our Truth and Reconciliation Story Time at 11AM on Sunday, September 29th, to hear some of these stories and to take part in our weekend events.
Monday, September 30th
Orange Shirt Day on September 30th is a commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community intergenerational impacts of residential schools and to promote the concept that every child matters. In recognition of the day, our staff will be wearing Orange Shirts all weekend.
Amherstburg celebrates many important days through the course of a year. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is one of the most important ones. We look forward to sharing all of these events with you.
