The sequel to 2023's The Judas Blossom; a sprawling historical fantasy with high stakes at the heart of war...

The Ilkanate is surrounded by enemies. Thanks to the interference of Behrouz, the Kozan, a new Crusade has begun, leaving the Europeans and Egyptians fighting each other to reclaim the Holy Land. This keeps them busy and prevents the Ilkhanate from having to fight two enemies at the same time. This allows Hulagu Khan to focus on his traitorous cousin, Berke Khan, rule of the Golden Horde, the northern most khanate. As Hulagu prepares for war, he is betrayed on all sides, by his son, by his newest wife, Kokochin, and people within the army. Thankfully Behrouz, the Kozan, is there to help him, although Hulagu’s paranoia continues to grow.

After escaping the palace and the clutches of the Empress, Princess Kokochin and her friend, Layla, flee the city of Tabriz. Working for the House of Grace, they travel across the country, and must persuade those provincial governors who refuse to serve Persia, by any means necessary.

Working within the khan’s army, Kaivon has to walk a fine line between appearing loyal to Hulagu, while also recruiting others to the rebellion. As Hulagu’s paranoia increases, and people labelled as traitors start to disappear at the hands of Behrouz, Kaivon’s time is running out. After surviving an ambush at Derbent, Kaivon is accused of being a traitor under false pretences, and turns to ash by Behrouz.

Working with three of the six Kozan in the world, Temujin learns about his powers, while also furthering their goal. The natural flow of events have been altered. In order to restore the natural order, Temujin and the other Kozan must accelerate the rise to power of a warlord named Timur, so that he will have a force large enough to destroy Hulagu’s army when the time is right.
