Set in the years just before the digital revolution, Kait is a young woman searching for identity and community among the cast-outs, cast-offs and other “misfit toys” that are part of a group of people who follow a band called the Open Road from town to town.
Known as Yellow Birds, Kait and her fellow travellers forge tenuous bonds as they go, dependent on each other for friendship and subsistence in their makeshift mobile homes, always moving forward while trying to reconcile—or forget—the circumstances that led each of them to life on Road Tour.
Just as Kait believes she has found her place among a group of Birds travelling together in a messy van, a boy with the eye-roll worthy name of Horizon sits beside her one night and alters her fragile plan for the foreseeable future. Amidst the whirlwind of Open Road Tour, their bohemian love story soars to ecstatic heights, while propelling them toward an impending reckoning with their troubled pasts.
