Joseph Reaume experienced three different Detroit governments during his sixty-year lifepan.Born in 1739, the French Fleur-de-Lis flew proudly over Fort Pontchartrain. Following the British takeover, and for most of his adult life, the Union Jack flew over the newly christened Fort Detroit. Today, Joseph’s remains lie in the soil of the United States of America, under the Stars and Stripes.
Joseph and his large French Canadien family weathered the fierce conflicts of the French and Indian War, Pontiac’s
Uprising, the American Revolution, and the Northwest Indian War. Surviving numerous perilous trials throughout these conflicts, he proved himself as an unsung hero of his era.
